It was a strange time for the UFC Light Heavyweight division. Jon Jones was away from competition due to his now various out of the cage issues. As Jones was arguably the pound for pound best and one of the biggest stars in the sport at the time, a fight between Cormier and Johnson was very much a 2nd prize for the UFC and the fans.
Still, it did seem that we had the clear #2 and #3 Light Heavyweights in the world. Cormier took MMA by storm, initially ripping his way through the stacked Strikeforce Heavyweight tournament before joining the UFC. He made the switch to Light Heavy as his main training partner, Cain Velasquez showed signs of holding the Heavyweight belt for a long time. It took just two fights at Light Heavyweight to set up a fight with then Champion, Jon Jones. Unfortunately for Cormier, he came up short in a bitterly contested fight against Jones, as everyone does. With Jones now temporarily out of the picture, this was Cormier’s chance to show he was the best fighter in the division who wouldn’t take PED’s, crash into pregnant women, etc.
Since giving up on the impossible and crazy dream of being a Welterweight, Johnson had completely turned his career around. He came into this fight off the back of two incredibly impressive KO wins against Lil Nog and Alexander Gustafsson respectively. Anthony Johnson truely looked every bit the most dangerous man in MMA and the guy to breath new life to the division.
This was an exciting one! Let’s see how it went down:
