Is the UFC Flyweight division really that boring?
Nearly a week after Demetrious Johnson cemented his place in history, many MMA fans don’t seem to be impressed. “Mighty Mouse” successfully defended his Flyweight title against Ray Borg at UFC 216. This defence saw him overtake Anderson Silva for the most consecutive title defence’s. The incredible feat though has been overlooked by many fans, the reason behind this is because the deem the Flyweight division boring.
A Stacked Division.
The Flyweight division in the UFC is pretty stacked, boasting talent such as Henry Cejudo, Sergio Pettis, Brandon Moreno, Wilson Reis and Joseph Benavidez. Not only does it have some big names, but it also has some of the most technically sound fighters on the planet. When the division was first introduced into the UFC, we saw one of the best fights in UFC history. This was between current champion Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall. Since September 2012, when Demetrious Johnson captured the Flyweight title, no one has been able to dethrone him. He’s had a lot of credible opponents put in his way but he brushed them all aside. Even though “Mighty Mouse”dominates his division that isn’t to say that the fighters in that division don’t put on a good show.
UFC president Dana White claims that fans aren’t interested in Flyweight fights and that’s the reason they don’t headline PPV’s. Albeit many Flyweights have headlined Fight Nights they don’t draw in the same audiences as they heavier weight classes.
Fans across the globe believe that Mighty Mouse cherry picked his last opponent. After Cody Garbrandt got injured, Mighty Mouse was slated to face TJ Dillashaw in August 2017. Those rumours got squashed pretty quickly when the UFC announced he’d be fighting Ray Borg in September 2017. Unfortunately Borg withdrew with illness and Dillashaw‘s name soon began circulating again. “Mighty Mouse” reportedly refused to fight Dillashaw for the Flyweight title. This in turn made fans accuse “Mighty Mouse” of ducking tough opponents and cherry picking to pad his record.
Do you think the Flyweight division is boring? Do you think Mighty Mouse is a cherry picker?
