UFC 214: Cormier vs Jones 2 Preview
Can Jon Jones reclaim the light-heavyweight title that he never lost?
Anaheim, California plays host to the biggest UFC card of the year this Saturday as it will see three title fights take place inside the Honda Center.
In the main event of the evening, Daniel Cormier will defend his light-heavyweight title against long-serving rival and former champion, Jon Jones. This will be the second time the two fighters will square off in the octagon. The pair previously met at UFC 182, where Jones was victorious via unanimous decision. This is the third time that the rematch has been scheduled. It was originally booked to take place at UFC 197 in Las Vegas, however, Cormier withdrew from the event three weeks prior, due to an injury. It was then set to headline UFC 200 but Jones was pulled from the fight by USADA. There is a lot of bad blood in this one as both men claim to be the ‘real champion’, and they’ll both have the chance to prove that on Saturday night.
The co-main event finally sees jiu-jitsu specialist Damian Maia get his shot at the welterweight strap after impressively racking up seven consecutive victories against some of the top contenders in the division. This will be champion, Tyron Woodley’s third defence of the title after successfully holding onto it after two very closely contested matches against Stephen Thompson. There is no doubt Maia poses a completely different threat to the one Woodley faced in Wonderboy and it will be interesting to see how the current champ deals with that.
Before those two clashes take place, current Invicta FC bantamweight champion, Tonya Evinger will take on one of the most feared fighters on the roster, Cris Cyborg for the vacant women’s featherweight belt after Germaine de Randamie was stripped of it for refusing to defend against the latter.
Saturday night also sees the return of former welterweight champion, Robbie Lawler. Despite those three title fights taking place, many UFC fans are predicting his return against Donald Cerrone to be the fight of the night. This match-up is a fight fans dream as it pits two of the best strikers in world against each other. The judges are unlikely going to be required for this one. It could also be argued that the winner of this would be the most deserving of a title shot in the welterweight division.
This is certainly going to be a huge night of action and cannot be missed.
