Stefan Struve Injured – Out of matchup against Junior Dos Santos at UFC: Halifax

What does this mean for the UFC Fight Night 105 main event?

Stefan Struve (28 – 8) has incurred shoulder injury and will not compete against Junior Dos Santos  (18-4) for their scheduled bout on February 19th.

The injury was first reported by Brazilian MMA media outlet Combate, then later confirmed by prominent MMA journalist Ariel Helwani on Thursday. A representative of Struve mentioned shoulder surgery and spoke to news platform mmafighting.com:

“[Struve] is having surgery tomorrow morning to repair an injury to his shoulder… He is very disappointed and looks forward to returning to competition as soon as possible. Thanks to all his fans for their ongoing support and he apologizes to Junior Dos Santos that they are not able to fight in February, but he looks forward to that fight in future.”

The pair were due to headline UFC Fight Night 105: dos Santos v Struve 2 in Halifax, Canada, a rematch of their previous bout at UFC 95 where Dos Santos won by TKO at 0:54 of the first round.

There has yet to be any official word from the UFC affirming the removal of Struve, or even a replacement to face Dos Santos. Struve has however announced the news on his personal Instagram:

A late step-in would look to capitalise on the situation facing Dos Santos, who is currently ranked No.4 in the Heavyweight division and a win over him would only benefit those involved.

Dos Santos who has alternated between wins and losses in his last six bouts would be looking to advance his title contention after most recently beating top contender and veteran Ben Rothwell (36-10) in a hard-fought unanimous decision victory last April.

Who would you like to see serve as a replacement and face former Heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos?

The current UFC Fight Night 105 card is as follows.

  • Junior dos Santos vs. TBA
  • Elias Theodorou vs. Cezar Ferreira
  • Thiago Santos vs. Jack Marshman
  • Carla Esparza vs. Randa Markos
  • Alvaro Herrera vs. Alessandro Ricci
  • Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Nordine Taleb
  • Reginaldo Vieira vs. Aiemann Zahabi
