Miesha Tate feels ‘blessed’ with Rousey rivalry
Former women’s bantamweight champion explains why she was blessed to have rivalry with Ronda Rousey.
One of the biggest rivalries in MMA in recent years has been between Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate. Both ladies partook in a duo of fights in both the UFC and Strikeforce, plus a stint coaching on The Ultimate Fighter. Tate recently explained why she is pleased she had the rivalry.
Tate feels that the pair gave each other a competitive edge, and it was this competitiveness that caught White’s eye, up until that point Miesha felt that women’s matchups were uncompetitive and mismatched.
“I think it was her and my fight together that was so close, it was back and forth, there was a lot of action, she almost caught me, then I got her back. Even at the end, I refused to tap. I let her snap my arm in half.” Tate believes it was this forced Dana White, and then UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta to change their minds and think “Ok, maybe the UFC can have a women’s division.”
When discussing why the two disliked each other so much Tate stated: “We’re just completely different people, she is who she is and I am who I am. I doubt we’ll ever probably see eye-to-eye. But that’s okay, you don’t have to like everyone, there are billions of people on this planet and I don’t have to like every single one of them.” However, dispute this Tate does respect Ronda as an athlete saying “I respect her tremendously as an athlete, I think she’s great, but as a person, not so much.”
Tate suggests the rivalry began when Ronda began talking ‘smack’ about her, Miesha responded to this, and it was not very well received by Ronda. “First impressions are first impressions, you have someone in your division talking smack about you, you’re kind of like wow, who the hell are you? it kind of set me off 0n the wrong note and then she didn’t like what I had to say. And that was it.”
On the possibility of a third meeting, Tate stated that although she does not wish to fight Rousey or anyone else again, if she was to get ‘that passion’ back there is only one person she has unfinished business with. Tate states that the trilogy fight was something she was working towards. “When Holly Holm fought Ronda, that was actually supposed to be my fight”, Tate said, “I was preparing for it and it didn’t work out for me, but it did for Holly. Then I beat Holly and it is what is it. I was ready and prepared in my mind that the third fight with Rousey was going to happen.”
Tate now feels however that at this point in time the fight will never come to fruition – “I know she’s engaged to Travis, and she probably wants to start a family. Who knows if she wants to return?, I certainly have no desire to want to return.”
