EXCLUSIVE: We open our doors to Bare Knuckle Boxing with BKB Champion Jimmy ‘The Celtic Warrior’ Sweeney

Bare Knuckle Boxing undefeated 4x titleholder Jimmy 'The Celtic Warrior' Sweeney speaks exclusively to MMA Thread about the sport.

We caught up with Jimmy to ask him a few questions before his BKB fight on the 28/1/2017 in Coventry. What was originally scheduled for ex-UFC Melvin Guillard, Mel has just recently pulled out and in his replacement also an ex-UFC fighter Cody McKenzie has stepped up.

Jimmy has a record of 13-0 and holds two English titles along with two Irish titles. He’s a WBKBC & WBKBC middleweight champion.

Bare knuckle boxing is in my blood it’s part of my culture I’ve grown up with it being an Irish traveller and being part of a fighting family it was only a matter of time I’d eventually fight bare knuckle. As a traveller bare knuckle boxing is used to settle feuds but also has sometime caused major feuds as well so I was never really a fan of fighting out but I heard I could do it legally and part of a sport I knew it was for me. Since I’ve started around 18 months ago I’ve recorded a record of 13-0 all by stoppage and become two weight world champion and undisputed P4P king and I’m not even in shape lol. The sport since I’ve started has grown massively and it’s still in its infancy so I can see it being a huge sport and in my opinion it’s the purest fight sport in the world and one I will dominate until I retire sparking all that comes before me, any fighter that thinks they can have take on the king come see me-

Question:

How did the fight with Melvin Guillard come about?

Answer:

My manager and part owner of Ubbad Jim Freeman Dove is always looking for top talent to bring to this sport and a guy called Shannon Ritch put him onto Melvin Guillard’s manager and it went from there really but Melvin has since pulled out of that fight because he’s fighting in an MMA competition around the same time but he’ll be back on April to fight me as long as I beat his replacement ex UFC fighter Cody McKenzie.

Question:

Seen as Cody as replaced Melvin how do you see the fight going?

Answer:

Yeah Cody is a good fighter and I respect all he’s done in MMA but this is my sport and I can’t see him making it out of the first round. I’m sending a message to melvin with this fight.

Question:

MMA has exploded over the last 10 years, where do you see UBBAD BKB ten years from now?

Answer:

To be honest I see bare knuckle boxing doing the exact same thing when you think just little over 2 years ago fighters were fighting in haybales with about 30 supporters watching but since Joe Brown took over we’ve gone from that to 2000 seater stadiums and we’ll be holding our April show in Coventry’s sky dome which holds 4000+ so the future for this sport is looking good.

Question:

What could be done to make BKB more globally recognised and popular?

Answer:

Getting fighters to fight me which is hard I’ll fight any top boxer or MMA fighter in my division if their men enough to fighter but it’s looking like their not.

Question:

Your always ready to fight especially with 13 fights within 18 months or so, so could you explain how the majority of your training camps go / how long you camp for?

Answer:

I fight near every 6 weeks so don’t get much rest after a fight to get into a training camp and I think the longest I’ve had so far was a 4 week training camp but my fights don’t last long so I don’t really need them.

Question:

What age were you when started boxing and if you’ve ever learned any other disciplines?

Answer:

I was 7yrs old when I first went into a boxing gym and have been doing that on and off since. I’ve won Irish amateur titles as an amateur but fell out of love with the sport but then I took up BKB and have the love for fighting back. No I never had an interest in any other sport so never bothered with them.

Question:

For those who have never watched BKB, why should they check it out/watch your fights?

Answer:

For those who haven’t watched it yet should really check it out its in my opinion the purest former of fighting ye will ever see. Why should they watch me because I’m the most exciting BKB in the game and I’m an absolute animal the most entertaining fighter they’ll ever see. Come check me out people

Question:

What’s next for you and what can we expect you to bring in 2017 with UBBAD BKB?

Answer:

2017 is gonna be a massive year not just for me but BKB I’m coming for all the top names in sports combat starting with sparking out CodMcKenzie and Melvin Guillard and I’m gonna put my sport in the international map and I’ve no doubt about that

Question:

You get a lot of attention from people of combat sports, Boxers, k1 guys, MMA guys etc would you personally ever cross over or will you continue with Bareknuckle?

Answer:

Yeah I’ve been asked to do so mma and pro boxing but I’m ubbad and bkb to the bone and I will stay with this sport and help them to be as big as the ufc has become. I feel with the management team and fighters we have and those we are attracting this sport will be at the forefront of combat sports and I’ll be the pinnacle of that.

Question:

In the good fashion Jimmy ‘The Celtic Warrior’ Sweeney is there anyone you would like to call out?

Answer:

When I’m done sparking Cody and Melvin who know McGregor could be next?

MMA Thread:

Well man it’s been an absolute pleasure talking with you and can’t wait to see this bout. Looking forward to catch up after it. Myself and all us here at MMA THREAD wish you all the best buddy

Jimmy:

The pleasure has been all mine mate. Hopefully everyone tune in to watch the king do what he does best and sparks another victim out.
