Dana White fires back at Meryl Streep

Dana’s not a happy man…

The fallout continues:

Following the comments made at the Golden Globes by actress Meryl StreepUFC president Dana White has responded to the comments made by the 67-year-old Oscar-winning actress:

“The last thing in the world I expect is an uppity, 80-year old lady to be in our demographic and love mixed martial arts”

Streep, who began the war of words stated that “Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. If we kick them all out we will have nothing but football and mixed martial arts to watch…These are not arts”

White and Steep are locked in a battle of words

Speaking to TMZWhite fired back at the actress stating “It’s not going to be everyone’s thing and the last thing I expect, is an uppity 80-year-old to be in our demographic and love mixed martial arts.” It is also known that there is some political background within this dispute – Streep was openly voicing her opposition against newly elected U.S president, Donald Trump. It is widely known that Dana was an open supporter of Trump – though he is not sure that is the reason that Streep decided to single out MMA in her speech.

White went onto say “I don’t know, maybe she did (single out MMA) but I’m not sure. Ari Emanuel is Hollywood, he makes movies and TV shows and he wasn’t a Trump supporter either – I don’t know” following from that he also stated “If you really look into who follows the UFC – it’s everybody. I do not expect an 80-year-old to be into MMA, listen everybody is into whatever. I’m not a big fan of golf but that doesn’t mean everybody should stop watching it. If you don’t like it – change the channel”

Streep, represented by WME-IMG‘s main competition, CAA, only made the lone comment about the sport. Though, this led to many fighters and various figures across the sport to criticise her for what was seen as disrespectful comments. White echoed the same sentiments as his colleagues by stating “Of course this is an art – these fighters, men and women spend their whole lives to become the best in the world. Those in the UFC are the elite of the elite. To say something stupid is like to say she is not a talented actress when she is a talented actress.”

White finalised the statement by also highlighting the diversity in the sport when Streep questioned the subject. “We have fighters from all over the world – world champions, women and men – she’s not educated about the sport and it was a completely uneducated comment”
