Can Bellator dethrone the UFC and become the world’s leading mixed martial arts promotion?
Bellator are wanting to sign the biggest names in mixed martial arts
When it comes to mixed martial arts the UFC is the premier organisation in the world followed closely by Bellator. After several big signings recently, Bellator look set to challenge the UFC to become the number one promotion in the mixed martial arts world.
Bellator have signed former top UFC stars, Chael Sonnen, Lorenz Larkin, Phil Davis, Rory Macdonald, Ryan Bader as well as signing Conor McGregor’s jiu-jitsu coach, Dillon Danis and they don’t plan on stopping there. According to MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani, Bellator’s parent company, Viacom have given the promotion the go ahead to go out and sign the biggest names in mixed martial arts.
“I was talking to someone, a rather high-up official, at the press conference at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday of last week,” Helwani stated on the MMA Hour. “They told me, ‘Look, Ariel, if you think we’re done as far as free agent signings are concerned, we are not done. We have been told from the highest level possible at Viacom to not stop now, too, as they put it, build the 1927 [New York] Yankees. Just sign every single big name out there.’ They are going to be very aggressive. I think when it comes to December or so, we’re going to look back on this time and say ‘wow, they just scratched the surface.’ At least that’s what they’re telling me right now.”
