The UFC announced on Wednesday that hard-hitting light heavyweight contender Jimi Manuwa (17-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) will take on Swiss striker Volkan Oezdimir (14-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) at UFC 214. The bout announcement comes just days after Oezdemir publicly called out Jimi Manuwa following his spectacular 28-second knockout victory at UFC Fight Night 109 vs Misha Cirkunov.
“Because he’s a striker, and now that [Anthony Johnson] is retired, I guess he’s the man in striking,” Oezdemir said of the Englishman. “I’m a striker. I want to be the man too, so we need to settle that.” Oezdemir is currently 2-0 in his young UFC career and clearly wants to rise to the top quickly. In his first octagon appearance he defeated Ovince Saint-Preux by split decision at UFC Fight Night 104 in February and has now followed that win up with a quick knockout victory.
Jimi Manuwa is currently on a 2-fight win streak with knockouts over Corey Anderson at UFC Fight Night 107 and Ovince Saint-Preux at UFC 204. Manuwa was in discussions to be the next person to fight UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier but Cormier chose to face Jon Jones instead. Manuwa is to be used as a back up fighter on this card in the event that anything were to happen to Jon Jones leading up to the fight.
The bout between Manuwa and Oezdemir is sure to be an explosive striking match that will have fans on the end of their seats due to both fighters ability to knock their opponents out. UFC 214 is expected to take place on July 29th at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California and will feature a main event bout between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones for the UFC light heavyweight championship.
